PC Notes for 12/3/13

Turn off active desktop
1) Right Click on the desktop
2) choose properties in the menu that opens
3) Choose the Web Tab
4) Remove the Active Desktop check mark
When in doubt, "Right Click" and look for what you want in the menu.
Downloading files, attachments
Run/Open vs. Save/Download to Computer
Run/Open=one time use
Save=keep for the future
**Both will download the file to your computer**
Run/Open->downloads->saves the file to a temporary location (that you can't easily access)-> will open the file once the download completes.
Save->downloads the file->saves the file to your desktop/downloads/documents folder(you have to locate the file and double click on it to open it)

Defragment the files that are bogging down the computer using Smart Defrag 1. Go to google.com 2. Type in the search bar, smart defrag and then press enter 3. Click on the first (unpaid) result which should be iobit.com 4. Click the link “download now” 5. The page will change click in the middle “download majorgeeks” 6. Wait for the page to load and you will be prompted to save or run the file you are downloading 7. Click “save” if possible choose the desktop as the location where you want to save the file 8. Backup Quicken to a Flash Drive 1. Insert the flash drive into the computer 2. Wait for the computer to detect the drive (a window displaying the contents of the flash drive may open) – Drive is identified by the letter E: or F: etc. 3. Open Quicken 4. Go to the “file” menu and choose “backup” 5. A window displaying the path of where the backup will be saved will appear The path should be to the E: or identifying letter of the flash drive 6. If not…you need to direct quicken to where to save the backup 7. Click “browse” 8. Find and click on “my computer” 9. From the list that appears click on the E: or identifying letter of the flash drive 10. Click OK and the window will close displaying the new path for where the backup will be saved 11.
