PC Class Notes for 4/7/15
Software adds functionality to your computer
Basic Must Have Software
Internet Browser – Internet Explorer (Preinstalled/Default), Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera
Install at least one other Internet Browser as a backup to Internet Explorer
Avoid Malicious Software from being downloaded from the internet by keeping your browser up to date.
Recommend using Google Chrome because – updates automatically, Flash is automatically updated
Plugins – Adobe Flash, Java, Acrobat Reader
Download Google Chrome
1.       Open Internet Explorer
2.       Click on the top bar where you see http:/…
3.       Delete the text in that bar
4.       Type in "chrome.google.com" (or Firefox.com, Opera.com)
5.       Press Enter
6.       Click the button titled "Download Now"
7.       Follow the prompts that appear on the screen
Installing software from the internet is a 2 step process
1.       First download the installation software and choose
Run (best choice for installing software & starting step 2)
or Save (Saves to usually the download folder for future reference)
2.       Installation of software, accepting terms & conditions, other settings, progress bar, etc and at the end confirmation of completion (Starts automatically if you choose "Run" or go to the Download folder and double click the file to start installation)
Setting the Web Brower of choice to be the default browser
1.       Access the settings/options of the browser you want to set as default (usually the top right, 3 lines, gear, or title on the left)
2.       Look for Set as Default

Click on the first (unpaid) result which should be iobit.com 4. Click the link “download now” 5. The page will change click in the middle “download majorgeeks” 6. Wait for the page to load and you will be prompted to save or run the file you are downloading 7. Click “save” if possible choose the desktop as the location where you want to save the file 8. Backup Quicken to a Flash Drive

Backup Quicken to a Flash Drive 1. Insert the flash drive into the computer 2. Wait for the computer to detect the drive (a window displaying the contents of the flash drive may open) – Drive is identified by the letter E: or F: etc. 3. Open Quicken 4. Go to the “file” menu and choose “backup” 5. A window displaying the path of where the backup will be saved will appear The path should be to the E: or identifying letter of the flash drive 6. If not…you need to direct quicken to where to save the backup 7. Click “browse” 8. Find and click on “my computer” 9. From the list that appears click on the E: or identifying letter of the flash drive 10. Click OK and the window will close displaying the new path for where the backup will be saved 11.
