7.16.19 Macintosh Class Notes


Update your Macintosh computer if things aren't working properly


  1. Click the Apple Menu (top left)
  2. Click the Updates category
  3. Wait for any updates to appear
  4. Click Update
    *Note you may need to restart your computer AND the update can take up to 30 minutes to complete


My Macintosh Mail Application doesn't work properly


-Restart your computer

-Make sure your computer is up to date (including upgrading your operating system)

-Rebuild the Mailboxes (Mailbox menu -> Rebuild)


**If those don't work, try downloading and using an alternative eMail Application like, Thunderbird, EmClient, Spark, Opera Mail


Download new Applications at the App Store with the assurance that it is safe of viruses or malware!

Use the search on the top left to find what you want

Click Get to start the Install App process


Find your app using the Launchpad (rocket ship)

On the dock or click spotlight (top right) and type in Launchpad

Delete an App from the Computer

1. Open the Launchpad

2. Press and hold on the App to remove

3. Click the X that appears on the top of the icon


Explore the app store to find utilities that can help improve your interactions with the computer like…Better Snap (drag windows to the sides to expand or resize them instantly) or Caffeine (temporarily disables the computer's Sleep settings)


What is Office 365?

Microsoft office's subscription based service that includes online versions of Word, Excel, etc. You can also download the newest versions of these applications as a subscription.

Apple users have a free alternative.

Word = Pages

Excel = Numbers

Powerpoint = Keynote

Outlook = Mail, Calendar, Contacts


Download an alternative that is Open Source

www.libreoffice.org (my preference)

www.openoffice.org





Can I upgrade my computer's memory, operating system, etc?

Check the serial number

1. Click the apple menu

2. Click About This Mac

3. Highlight and copy the serial number


Visit https://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup paste the serial number in the box and "lookup" the specs of your computer including what you can upgrade
