Understanding Accounts and Services Related to Them

What type of email do you use?

  • Gmail = Google

  • Yahoo

  • AOL

  • iCloud, Me, Mac = Apple

  • Hotmail, Outlook, Live, MSN = Microsoft

  • Comcast, Sonic, Sbcglobal, Att, Pacbell (Internet Service Providers)

  • Other, University (might use Google or Microsoft/365)


Browser - Software used to access the Internet

Default Browser on a Mac = Safari = icloud, mac, me (emails)

Browser for Google = Chrome = gmail (email)

Browser for Microsoft = Edge = Hotmail, Outlook, Live, MSN (emails)


Apple does not upgrade SAFARI if you don’t have an up to date Operating System.

So some websites like banks won’t work on older Operating Systems using old versions of Safari…but they will recommend using another browser like Chrome, Firefox, etc.

Do you want to upgrade your operating system? Be careful because it could start other problems. If it’s not broken don’t fix it.


Download Google Chrome

  1. Visit chrome.google.com or in Google search type “download chrome”
    *Note Chrome is only available for OS 10.15 Catalina or newer (Click Apple on top left, choose “about this mac”, OS is displayed)

  2. App will download to your computer to the “Downloads” folder

  3. Go to the Downloads folder (click the finder face on the left of the dock, to open a window to find Downloads on the left or click “go” menu to reveal downloads) to open and find the downloaded file

  4. Double click the icon to start the installation


Keep the Chrome icon on the Dock

Click and hold down on the Chrome icon

From the menu that appears, click Choose Options and Keep in Dock


Login to your Chrome Web Browser so your settings, bookmarks, passwords and more are saved in the Cloud.

Click Sign In

  1. Click the Circular icon on the top right

  2. Click Turn on Sync

  3. Login with your Google account information

 


Access your Password List

  1. Click the Circular icon on the top right

  2. Click the Key icon

  3. A list of all the website you’ve chosen to have your user name and password saved appears.

  4. To view the information for a website you must type in the password of your computer (used to install applications or sign into the computer)

  5. Once you’ve unlocked the Password manager you can view the information


Don’t have a Google account? No Problem sign up with any email address to Sync Settings and Save Passwords

  1. Click Create Account

  2. Fill out the information as requested

  3. Choose a new gmail address they recommend, choose your own gmail email or “Use Your Existing Email”

  4. Follow the instructions to complete setup of your Google account.

Login with Google - Bypass the need to create a new account for a website look for the login with Google and use the Google account you used to login to the new website.
No new user name and another new password.

  1. Click Login

  2. Choose login with Google or click the G for Google

  3. You will need to confirm your account

  4. Then agree to connect using Google
