10.9.2025 Streaming Services and Remote Controls Workshop
Session Overview
- This was a follow-up to last week's informational session about streaming
- The instructor focused on providing step-by-step guidance for accessing streaming services
- Topics covered included remote controls, QR code scanning, and subscription management
Remote Control Identification
- Different remotes indicate different streaming capabilities:
- Basic Xfinity remote (without microphone button) can't access streaming
- Advanced Xfinity remotes (with microphone button) can access streaming services
- TV manufacturer remotes (Samsung, Sony, LG) may have preset buttons for streaming services
- Fire Stick and other streaming device remotes have dedicated streaming buttons
Accessing Streaming Services
- Access depends on which remote/device you're using:
- For Xfinity: Press and hold microphone button, then say the service name (e.g., "Netflix")
- For TV remotes: Use preset buttons if available or navigate to apps section
- For Fire Stick: Use dedicated buttons or navigate through menus
- Remember that having the button doesn't mean you have access—subscription required
Logging In to Streaming Services
- Modern login methods use QR codes instead of typing email/password
- Recommended approach:
- Download streaming apps on your phone and log in there first
- When TV shows QR code, scan it with your phone to authorize TV
- This eliminates need to type passwords on TV
iPhone QR Code Scanner
- No need to download QR code scanner apps (they often contain adware)
- Access built-in scanner:
- Swipe down from top-right corner to open Control Center
- Look for "Scan Code" button (looks like a QR code in frame)
- If not visible, press and hold on gray area to customize controls
- Add "Scan Code" to Control Center
Subscription Management
- Multiple ways to watch streaming content (TV, computer, tablet, phone)
- Share subscriptions within households:
- Amazon Prime allows family accounts
- Apple services have family sharing
- Most services allow multiple profiles
- Services typically allow sharing within same household (same IP address)
Troubleshooting Tips
- If constantly asked to log in again:
- May need to update device software
- Go to settings to check for updates
- If remote not responding:
- Check battery level (accessible through Xfinity button)
- Remember remote buttons have different functions:
- "Back" returns to previous screen
- "Exit" returns to live TV or exits application completely
- Xfinity button provides access to apps
