Use a reliable email service. *If you are on @comcast.net setup a secondary email address. And you can forward emails from @comcast.net to your new email while you slowly transition over to a more secure email provider.

Getting too much Spam (Junk Mail)

• Unsubscribing doesn't usually work
• Use the SPAM/Junk filters
• Create your filters/rules

~If the above options don't help, setup a secondary email address and share the new address with friends and family while leaving the junk behind in the old email.

How to create a new email address?

Go to gmail.com (Google), outlook.com (Microsoft)

Choose Create Account, follow the prompts

How do you access your emails?

Webmail = gmail.com, outlook.com (this is recommended by the email provider because they have control over what you see, including the ads)

Mail Client App = Macintosh Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, 

2 Layer SPAM filter

• 1st filter = Mail Providers Spam/Junk filters from your provider. Best Spam/Junk filters gmail.com, outlook.com.
• 2nd filter = Mail Client (Only on Computers, like Macintosh Mail or Microsoft Outlook) also have Spam/Junk filters so they scan your inbox again *Be sure your Junk Mail Filter is activated. Go to Settings

If you have a mail service that does not do a good job filtering out SPAM/JUNK from your inbox, use a Mail Client to control the Junk.

**Mobile Devices (tablets & phones) don't have the 2nd filter in the mail app you might see different emails in your mobile inbox vs. your computer

Benefits of Webmail vs. Mail Apps (i.e. Macintosh Mail, Outlook)

Webmail - improved security, use the enhanced features of your mail provider like presorted mailboxes and ai suggestions

Mail Apps - retrieve emails from more than one account, customize the interface like font size

Look for advanced features and enhancements under settings.

Why are there so many mailboxes, especially in gmail.

The essential mailboxes are Inbox, Trash, Sent, Drafts and Spam/Junk

The other mailboxes are there to help you find what you might be looking for.

You can use folders/labels to organize emails or leave it in the inbox and just use the search bar.

Use the search bar to find emails.

In Gmail click the icon on the far right of search for more search options.

Create a filter or rule in gmail to automatically delete emails that include the word mortgage or other unwanted emails. Click the Search Options type in the Has The Words > "mortgage" > Click Create Filter > Check what to do with the emails that match your criteria > click Create Filter

Delete emails with videos and photos so your email storage doesn't reach the 5GB quota. If the attachment is important, download and save the attachment to your computer and then delete the email.
