Macintosh notes for 2/18/14

Dictation tool - Speech to text
Turn on the Dictation tool
1) Open System Preferences (apple menu - top left)
2) Choose Dictation & Speech
3) Choose the On radio button
**note which button needs to be pressed to activate the dictation tool, i.e. fn key twice

Using the dictation tool
1)Push FN twice in a text editor, pages, word, email
2)A microphone will appear
3)Speak clearly what you want it to type and the text will appear

**You must SPEAK the punctuation you want to appear. i.e. period, question mark, new line, etc.**

Speech Tool - Reading text to you
Turn on the Speech tool
1) Open System Preferences (apple menu - top left)
2) Choose Dictation & Speech
3) Choose "speak selected text…"
**note which combination of buttons need to be pressed to active the speech tool

Backup your computer using TIMEMACHINE
Look for External Hard Drive, with 1 wire (USB) connection ($130)
Setting up Time Machine
1) Connect new external hard drive to the back of your computer using the USB connection
2) Click the analog clock on the top bar
3) Choose "Open Time Machine Preferences"
4) Choose "select backup disk"
5) Choose the disk displayed
6) Turn on Time Machine

Use iCloud to backup contacts and text documents you've saved (not recommended if you have photos or large files because of the 5GB maximum free storage space they give you)
1) Open System Preferences (apple menu - top left)
2) Choose "iCloud"
3) Type in your AppleID and password
4) Select what you want to Backup

***Tip if you need to access a contact's information and you are not by your computer, you can login to iCloud.com to access your backed up address book.***

Listening to music or radio online
use an online music player:
www.spotify.com
www.pandora.com
or search for your radio station's website to "Listen Live"
1) Search using google the radio stations call number i.e. kgo radio
2) Choose the result that is returned
3) Look for a button or link that says "Listen Live"
4) Follow the directions to listen to their station
