Macintosh Notes for 5/17/16

About this Mac - displays information about the Macintosh Software (Operating System) & Hardware (Hard Drive, Memory etc)
**Be sure to keep at least 20% of your hard drive free to keep the computer running smoothly**
Need more space to store files, buy an external Hard Drive.
Use the Serial Number to lookup computer specifications, like can I add more memory to make it faster, update to the newest operating system, how much can I sell my computer for.
1. Open the Internet
2. Go to Google
3. Type in Macintosh Serial Lookup
4. Click on the first link, everymac.com
5. Click on the Apple menu
6. Choose About This Mac
7. Copy the Serial Number (or click in the middle of the screen if you don't see it)
8. Go back to the webpage and paste the serial number in the box and click Lookup
9. Confirm you are not a robot by clicking the check box
10. Your computer's specifications will appear. To view the complete list click the link at the bottom of the specs.
11. Look for RAM (memory), PreInstalled MacOS, CurrentRetail

System Preferences - Make changes to the computer's settings

App Store - download and install applications for added functionality
1. Find the app
2. Click Get or the $$
3. Let the app install
4. Open the app from the Launchpad
**Remove an App**
1. Open Launchpad
2. Click and hold on the App
3. Click the X

Recent items - displays by default the last 10 documents that were opened
**Change the number of documents to store in the list**
1. System preferences
2. Choose General
3. Change 10 to 50

Logout - exit the finder to a screen asking for a password to be entered to access the finder

Sleep vs Shutdown
Either is fine!
But if your computer is acting at all strange, restart it to give it a fresh start.

Force Quit - Force an open/stuck/frozen application to quit
**Keyboard Shortcut - hold option, command and tap ESC**


Launchpad - Displays all the applications installed in the computer

Find the Launchpad if you don't see the round icon with a rocket on your dock.
1. Click on the magnifying glass (spotlight) in the top right
2. Type in launchpad to find it
3. Click to open it
