Avoid Damage to Your Electronic Devices in a Power Outage or Power Surge
For Desktop Computers:
Get a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) a battery that gives you enough time to save any open documents and shut down the computer properly to prevent a loss of data or data corruption.
UPS devices cost about $100 and some are about the same size as a surge protector.
Make sure your electronic devices are connected to the power via a Surge Protector NOT a Power Strip

Sleep vs Hibernate
Sleep is instant on. No snapshot of the last task is saved. In a power outage anything not saved is lost.
Hibernate takes a few seconds to load. Takes a snapshot of the last task and saves it. In a power outage there is no need to worry about unsaved data.
How can I check if my computer is setup to sleep vs hibernate.
Click the Start Menu
Type in Power to see a list of Power related applications
Choose Power and Sleep Settings
Make the necessary changes in the settings
*for more advanced customization
Click Additional Power Settings
Preferred Power Settings will be displayed
Click Change
Click change Advanced Power Settings
View and adjust the settings (0=turn off)
Turning off the Computer PROPERLY
Go to the Start (Microsoft Flag) on the bottom right and choose shut down or power/turn off
or
Setup the power button to shutdown the computer
Click the Start Menu
Type in Power to see a list of Power related applications
Choose Power and Sleep Settings
Make the necessary changes in the settings
Click Additional Power Settings
Click "Choose What the Power Button Does" on the left
Select in the pull down the option for the power button to turn off the computer
My computer won't turn Off.
Hold the power button down for 30 seconds to force the computer to turn off

Drop off your electronic garbage so it can be sustainably recycled or salvaged.
BUT...if the device has information on it be sure to get it formatted, deleted, or removed!
