Using the Internet and the WWW Effectively (Mac)


Understanding how to use Safari the default Mac Web Browser


If you use the Macintosh Web Browser you’d want to use Safari and the Apple password keeper.


Access the Apple password Keeper by going to:

  1. The Apple Menu

  2. Choose System Preferences/Settings

  3. Look for Passwords

  4. Login with your computer’s password


Using Apple’s Password Keeper

A list of already saved passwords will appear.

Click the i with a circle to reveal the website, user name and password.

Once you open the login you can also Edit or Delete the entry.


Click the + on the top right to create/save a new website login and password.

Save daily or weekly accessed websites as a Favorite

Favorites appear when you first open a Safari window, unless you set a custom homepage.

You can see your Favorites on the favorites bar.

Click the View menu

Choose Show Favorites Bar

The bar appears towards the top of the window under the address bar


Customize the Favorites bar by adding frequently accessed websites

To add a website to the bar:

  1. Go to the website you want to add

  2. Click the address of the website on the top, the .com, .net, etc

  3. Drag the icon (globe or logo) to the left of the address onto the bar

  4. Space will be made on the bar for the new website

Drag items on the bar to change the order.


Remove a website from the bar:

  1. Hold down CONTROL and click on the name you want to delete from the bar

  2. A menu appears

  3. Choose Delete


Rename an item on the favorites bar to make space for more websites

  1. Hold down CONTROL and click on the name you want to delete from the bar

  2. A menu appears

  3. Choose Rename


Create a Folder to store more items

  1. Hold down CONTROL and click on a space between two items

  2. Choose New Folder

  3. Type in a new name for the category

  4. Drag websites you want into the new category to create a sublist

Using Tabs to quickly navigate between commonly accessed websites.

Examples would be your morning routine, 1. check email via webmail - gmail.com 2. Read the news - sfgate.com 3. Listen to music - kdfc.com 4. Play daily Wordle - https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle

To create a new tab (3 options):

Click the File menu, choose new tab

Click the + on the top right of the window

Hold down Command + tap T


Go to website you want to see, create another new tab and repeat, as needed for each website you want to have easily accessible


*To close a tab, hover over the tab, click the X

Change the homepage, prefer seeing your favorites or Google or something else

  1. Click the Safari Menu (top left)

  2. Choose Settings

  3. Click General

  4. Beside Homepage: Type in what you want to see. I.e. google.com gmail.com

  5. Beside the top three options, Safari Open With, New Windows…, New Tabs.. choose what you’d prefer to see from the list

  6. Close the window to save the settings


Safari and Extensions

Safari does have an option to add extensions but because of enhanced security, it can be cumbersome. Because of that there aren’t too many extension available as there are on Chrome.


Feel free to explorer the extensions by going to:

  1. Click the Safari menu

  2. Choose Safari Extensions

  1. Click the three dots to see the Chrome menu

  2. Hover over Extensions

  3. Choose Manage Extensions to view the already installed extensions


Click the switch to turn off or on an extension.

Click Remove to delete the extension permanently.

**If you see an extension that is suspicious or you don’t know what it is, Remove It. Malicious extensions/add-ons can take over your browser and give you undesirable results.


Add Extensions/Add-ons you want.

Example. 

Malware Bytes - blocks ads and protects you from accidentally visiting malicious websites

Rakuten - earn a rebate check when you shop online at participating websites

Google Translate - will translate webpages into the language of your choice


  1. Click the three dots to see the Chrome menu

  2. Hover over Extensions

  3. Choose Visit Chrome Web Store to browse and install new extensions


Browse by category or type in the search what you’d like to find, either by name or function


  1. Click Add to Chrome

  2. Confirm by clicking “Add Extension”

  3. Your new extension has been added


Click the puzzle piece on the top right to view your extensions.

Click the pin to have the extension visible.

Click the extension to see more options and to control the extension.
